Can You Make A Plastic Cap Look Cute? I Certainly Can’t!

I tried though, I really tried. It’s just like those sexy satin scarves we wear to bed, so-not-that-cute but completely essential. We are invested in our journey so a few hours with your eyes closed in the dark not looking like a supermodel are well worthwhile. That is not me saying that I look like a supermodel but you get me. The last few weeks I have been learning the amazing benefits of deep conditioning using the gorgeous plastic caps you can see me modelling and it really does make a difference. I’ve spent my life with neglected, dry hair.…

Now I Know My Hair…

I have a greater understanding of my hair now, after some tests I am pretty sure I have fine hair, low to medium density hair and low porosity hair. This a new world to me and I need to learn what all of it means. The main thing I am focusing on at the moment is the low porosity and making sure I am using the right kinds of products to keep my hair healthy, soft and moisturised. The low porosity of my hair means that the cuticles are laying flat making it much harder for moisture to penetrate, hence…

The First 4 Weeks

So 4 weeks ago, I went through with chopping all my hair off and deciding to try to be a better me. I thought I knew what this entailed but it is going to be a much longer journey than I think I could have ever anticipated. This is a lifelong change that confirms to me that your life is a work in progress. Let’s look at the main things I’ve been working on. WRITING I’ve done some writing, not my best work, but I overcame a fear and published it for the world to see, if anyone comes across…

What Type Of Hair Do I Have? I Thought It Was Just Called An Afro!

This would have seemed like an odd question a few months ago but now I know that it is so important to better understand my actual hair. Using the most common hair typing system, there are 4 types of hair, straight, wavy, curly and kinky. Mine is definitely in the fourth category of kinky. You can break each hair type into more detailed sections, for type 4 these are commonly described as coily, crimpy and ziggly. I can’t for the life of me determine which one I am because I think I am all three in different parts of my…

My Name Is Leona And I Think I Am A Writer…Maybe

So I obviously fancy myself a writer a little bit as I’ve started a blog. But when I describe or sheepishly refer to myself as a writer or talk about my aspirations of writing, this is talking about fiction. Writing about myself or my hair and my weight is pretty easy. Easy in comparison to letting people read my stories. As much as I’m allowing people into my world when I describe the issues with my hair or my body, it is completely different allowing you to read a story of mine. It’s like letting someone peer into my soul.…

Week 2: My Old Hair Care Routine vs My New Hair Care Routine (Part 1)

As you can see, I’m making some real progress here. It’s crazy that the photos I took to announce my baldness to the world, beautifully taken by my lovely husband, are now out of date. I had that look for such a short amount of time, I’m not even sure if it was worth going THAT short. But it was fun while it lasted. I do not think my hair growth rate is even close to half an inch a month (average for everyone) but we will plod on regardless because I have no other choice. Now I am emerging…

That Weight Is Dropping Off So Easy…

Why the picture of the Yeo Valley? Why not? Well it is because somehow I now weigh 63.6kg and that was the treat I gave myself, yes, I should not be treating myself with food but it’s fairly healthy food. I didn’t even eat the whole pot (just under 500 calories)! I’ve lost 1.5kg and I’m shocked because I don’t even feel like I have put in as much effort as I could this last week. But there it is, photographic proof that I tipped the scale at a measly 63 kilos. Wooo! The changes I made this week were…

One Week On, Still Bald…Sort Of

I guess there is no going back now! I’m not sure why it has taken me a week to come to that realisation but I’m here now. It’s all still looking a little bare up there but if I run my hand over my head there are short little hairs on every inch of my scalp. You can even see it from a distance, not too far, maybe about 3 feet but there is definitely something there. Apparently, hair grows on average 0.5 inches per month and I’m well on my way…I think. I’m not sure how long it has…

I Weigh 65.1kg :(

On the day I shaved off all my hair, I weighed myself and I weighed 65.1kg or 10 stone 8 pounds and 3 ounces or just a good old 143.5lbs. I am about 5 foot 4 inches, give or take an inch or so. I thought this made me overweight but turns out to my surprise I am in the healthy category according to the NHS BMI calculator with a BMI of 24.6, so yay! Although, that is the very top end of healthy so the celebrations are short-lived and I may have inflated my height ever so slightly. But…

Song of the Month

November 2016 – Phenomenal Woman by Laura Mvula

LINK TO THE VIDEO My first song of the month! Definitely, the first of many, many more… I love music. I love dancing around my living room, singing at the top of my lungs with my kids, I love when music just makes you feel good, makes you want to sing louder, make you wish it was your song. Well this song does that for me. Also the fact that Laura Mvula is proudly sporting a bald head makes me more confident that I have nothing to be embarrassed or worried about. She looks amazing but more importantly sounds amazing.…
