Hair Products (Bought), Reviews

Speed Reviews #3

It’s so hard these days to dedicate a whole post to one product the way I used to, so I don’t anymore 😁.

Here’s a rundown of my first impressions of a few random products I’ve tried since I started my blog and this healthy hair journey way back in November 2016.

My DNA Detangling Conditioner

I have to say the packaging looks either a little cheap or just outdated but the contents are what matters and I liked this conditioner. I randomly bought this as part of my British Curlies closing down haul. I’m not aware of the brand in any other way except it was cheap in the sale. I was pleasantly surprised because I remember this giving great slip even with it’s thick, sticky texture. It can legitimately claim to be a detangling conditioner.

It doesn’t stand out enough to head onto my Holy Grail but it does get a thumbs up in my Product A-Z.

Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque

Now you might think that this is a long product name but it also has a subtitle: “w/ Shea Butter, Peppermint & Apple Cider Vinegar“. Now you can think it’s a long name! But these are all ingredients I use regularly – JBCO, shea butter, peppermint, ACV in my DIYs and what I look for in products I buy. So you’d think that me and this product would be a match made in heaven.

My hair loves it! I can’t remember how long I had it on but my notes say next time if I don’t use heat, leave it on for at least an hour but definitely not overnight as it doesn’t make much difference. When I used this, I didn’t know anything about protein moisture balance and I only know a little bit more now but turns out I don’t react negatively to protein. For those that do, you might find your hair feels hard after using protein heavy products  containing ingredients like hydrolyzed keratin, soy or wheat and amino acids.

I definitely want to investigate protein more and this is a very popular product in all the hair groups I’m in, so I want to give this another go, now I know *slightly* more!

Palmer’s Coconut Oil Repairing Conditioner

Overall, I do like Palmer’s products. I definitely prefer their skincare to their haircare. But I’m not sure how much I trust them since they discontinued my beloved Palmer’s Olive Oil Cleansing Conditioner.I have a lot of sentimental attachment to that product since it was with me when my journey started. But we’re not here about that now…

I will admit that I wasn’t impressed after the first use of this conditioner. It, of course, had a beautiful scent. That coconut smacks you right in the face, in a good way though. But it felt like I had to use a lot to cover my hair which was a surprise as my hair was quite short at the time. I couldn’t tell if it wasn’t providing enough slip or I wasn’t using enough and I didn’t really want to use any more! But I will give it credit for the fact that my hair felt soft.

Like I do, with most products, I tried it again. It’s never really fair to write a product off after one go unless it made your hair fall out! The next time it was used was after shampoo and I gave in and used more. It definitely worked better but I only got about 4 uses out of the tube which is pretty poor. I’ve got some notes about using it as a prepoo mixed in with Coconut Oil as suggested by Naturally Tasmin but no notes for how that went…🤔

Lottabody Coconut & Shea Oils Moisturize Me Curl & Style Milk

I originally used this as a sample on No. 3. Considering it’s called a Milk, I was taken back by how thick it was. His hair really liked it, in spite of the thickness. It didn’t weigh down his curls and if it ever does, we could always use a little less. I like it enough to buy more so that’s saying something. For me and my daughter, this is followed up with a cream and an oil but it’s enough for the little man on it’s own in damp hair. His hair feels moisturised and his curls look styled…wait a minute!! Does it do what it says on the sachet? Bottle?

When I did buy an actually bottle, I had to cut it open because when I say it’s thick, it’s too thick for the damn pump bottle they put it in. A whole third of it was unpumpable. A tube to squeeze would be much more preferable. I hate when products are in the wrong type of receptacle but that aside, I would recommend for wavy curlies like my son to kinky coilies like me!

This week’s MVP though is definitely the Shea Moisture Masque and I can’t wait to try it again when my new-to-me product ban ends. Hopefully it’ll be as good as I remember.

Let’s keep growing together!
