Now I Know My Hair…(cont’d)

Now where was I… So that miracle oil, coconut oil may not actually be a miracle for me with my low porosity follicles. Which is a great shame as I have about 14 jars on top of a cupboard in my house. Oops! So some say it is too heavy for my type of hair but I honestly say I am on the fence about it. I’ve had no ill effects using it, I quite like it, not just how it makes my hair feel but, and this may make me a bit of a freak, I like melting it…

Can You Make A Plastic Cap Look Cute? I Certainly Can’t!

I tried though, I really tried. It’s just like those sexy satin scarves we wear to bed, so-not-that-cute but completely essential. We are invested in our journey so a few hours with your eyes closed in the dark not looking like a supermodel are well worthwhile. That is not me saying that I look like a supermodel but you get me. The last few weeks I have been learning the amazing benefits of deep conditioning using the gorgeous plastic caps you can see me modelling and it really does make a difference. I’ve spent my life with neglected, dry hair.…

Now I Know My Hair…

I have a greater understanding of my hair now, after some tests I am pretty sure I have fine hair, low to medium density hair and low porosity hair. This a new world to me and I need to learn what all of it means. The main thing I am focusing on at the moment is the low porosity and making sure I am using the right kinds of products to keep my hair healthy, soft and moisturised. The low porosity of my hair means that the cuticles are laying flat making it much harder for moisture to penetrate, hence…

The First 4 Weeks

So 4 weeks ago, I went through with chopping all my hair off and deciding to try to be a better me. I thought I knew what this entailed but it is going to be a much longer journey than I think I could have ever anticipated. This is a lifelong change that confirms to me that your life is a work in progress. Let’s look at the main things I’ve been working on. WRITING I’ve done some writing, not my best work, but I overcame a fear and published it for the world to see, if anyone comes across…

What Type Of Hair Do I Have? I Thought It Was Just Called An Afro!

This would have seemed like an odd question a few months ago but now I know that it is so important to better understand my actual hair. Using the most common hair typing system, there are 4 types of hair, straight, wavy, curly and kinky. Mine is definitely in the fourth category of kinky. You can break each hair type into more detailed sections, for type 4 these are commonly described as coily, crimpy and ziggly. I can’t for the life of me determine which one I am because I think I am all three in different parts of my…

Week 3: My Old Hair Care Routine vs My New Hair Care Routine (Part 2)

Okay, so I won’t be needing the wide tooth comb, or any comb, anytime soon but I’m looking forward to when I do! Week three and counting…So I previously was talking about my routine, my old bad habits, the things I want to do going forward, the so-called rules of good hair and also the new techniques and terms that I have learnt. To that end, I will pick up where I left off. PRE-POOING Pre-pooing is that weird thing that seems pointless but it really does have a point. When you wash your hair, no matter what you use,…

Week 2: My Old Hair Care Routine vs My New Hair Care Routine (Part 1)

As you can see, I’m making some real progress here. It’s crazy that the photos I took to announce my baldness to the world, beautifully taken by my lovely husband, are now out of date. I had that look for such a short amount of time, I’m not even sure if it was worth going THAT short. But it was fun while it lasted. I do not think my hair growth rate is even close to half an inch a month (average for everyone) but we will plod on regardless because I have no other choice. Now I am emerging…

One Week On, Still Bald…Sort Of

I guess there is no going back now! I’m not sure why it has taken me a week to come to that realisation but I’m here now. It’s all still looking a little bare up there but if I run my hand over my head there are short little hairs on every inch of my scalp. You can even see it from a distance, not too far, maybe about 3 feet but there is definitely something there. Apparently, hair grows on average 0.5 inches per month and I’m well on my way…I think. I’m not sure how long it has…

Day One Of The Journey To Tailbone Length Hair (That’s Really Long By The Way)

So it wasn’t all a really weird dream. I did take a razor to my head yesterday and shave all my hair off. Oops! To add insult to injury, today I awoke to the first frost of the year. My cousin did say that I should probably wait to lop it all off until Spring but stubborn me decided to stick to my arbitrary deadline and it is soooooo cold! It has made me question if my goal to have tailbone/ bum length hair is realistic and whether I can stay motivated for the 5 years plus that it will…

Who Needs Hair Anyway?

.Hi. Yay to my first post!! Woo! So that girl above is me. First picture is me with my fro before I took the plunge. The 2nd and 3rd photo are what happened next. You can even see the shine off my perfectly bald head, that’s how smooth I went. It’s quite an odd sensation doing a wet shave on your head. After months of psyching myself up for this it’s done. I am not disappointed, I am feeling myself right now. Right now, I feel good, but I was worried I might end up looking like Sisqo. You know,…
