Hair Products (Bought), Skin and Beauty

Ending My Product Junkie Ways?

Damn! That picture is really saying a thousand words with those thousand products! Okay, so there aren’t a thousand products there but I dread to think how much money is just lying on my bed!

Hi, my name is Lee and I am a product junkie.

But I don’t want to be anymore.

Farewell To My Product Junkie Ways

I’ve decided that basically I’m sick of my own over consumption of haircare. I feel like I’ve worn my product junkie-ism like a badge of honour since I started my healthy hair journey in 2016. Buying products like they’re going out of style and having fully stocked cupboards was a must.

But I think I’ve got to the point now in my journey were that’s not important to me anymore. It’s not like I need the products for reviews/ content for the blog. In fact, I have so many drafts in progress that I’m kind of overwhelmed. I reckon I could write a years worth of content with the posts I’ve started or been unable to start due to the lack of focus of having so much to write about. I think I’ll have more time to experiment and blog about styles rather than being so review heavy once this stash has diminished.

For the reader, the blog will mostly seem the same. For me, I’ll finally be getting a lot of my drafts published. There are so many drafts 😢

The need, in fact more accurately, the desire to give new products a try just doesn’t do it for me the way it used to. Don’t get me wrong, there are brands I want to try but I’d rather actually use the stuff I’ve got stockpiled first. My journey now needs to be about consistency and building on what works. I’m so in love with my hair at the moment and any new products in the mix that aren’t tried and tested might upend all that progress. I want to experiment but right now, I want the way I feel to continue more.

And in all honesty, I have enough stuff I haven’t tried yet in the cupboards to keep me going for a while especially shampoos. As an avid co-washer and a new recruit to that clay life, I’m not sure I’ll ever need to buy shampoo again!

Holy Grail

Although I’ve started a Holy Grail list (this is my Holy Grail and recent Holy Grail update), I think this year will really show me what my true Holy Grail products are. What do I gravitate towards? What really works for me? I often review things after I’ve finished one bottle/ tub/ sachet but how will my hair like it after 3 months, 6 months, a year of usage? I don’t know. My hair loved Coconut Oil at the start and now we’re no longer friends. Will I fall out of love with my current faves?

I think this may also give me a good chance to DIY a little bit more too. I’ve recently started using up my clay that I bought an age ago. I can start making oil blends from my oil collection. I see this as a really positive thing for me, my hair and my pocket. And I might actually get all of our products to fit on one shelf. Rather than a shelf and a half, an under sink cupboard and a large storage box!

This journey to change my buying habits has already started. October 31st was my last chance to buy new stuff. And I’ll admit, I had a last little splurge but I’m really serious about 2021 being the beginning of a change.

The Rules

Obviously, I’ll run out of products by using them. But instead of paying attention to that new launch or thinking I haven’t tried this, I’ll only buy products I’ve loved. Basically anything on my Product A-Z that has a thumbs up. Now that looks like a really long list of stuff still. So I’ll mainly be guided by Holy Grail products and pocket depending 💰💰💰, I’ll buy those. But if I can’t get them because of price or stock levels, I can choose anything I’ve previously liked. And I’ll review at the end of 2021 and hopefully I won’t want to go back to the days of buying any and everything.

All this applies to my kid’s hair too. We’re in a good place with that, so I want to try and keep it simple for all of us. Especially since my eldest is now starting to take a keen interest in actually doing her hair herself. I don’t want to confuse her with all the different products we have coming in and out of the house if I’m going to explain to her why we are using them and how to use them.

If a product is discontinued, I may have to re-think but in almost all product categories, I have a few options available to me. That’s a positive of having been a product junkie, there aren’t many product types I haven’t tried or have in my stock to try.

Does My Skin Have To Suffer Through This Too?

I don’t see this as suffering, it’s improving my buying habits, it’s being more sensible and consistent. It can only be a good thing! And yes, this change sort of applies to skincare but my last post was about what my mid to long term plans are with skincare. Basically, I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing now because my skin feels so good, is clearer, looks smoother and is moisturised so much better. There would be babies jealous of how smooth my skin is right now.

Bring On 2021!

There may be FOMO, there may be jealousy but I can do this! My hair needs me to. Good luck to all the new brands coming out in 2021, I won’t be trying you!

Let’s keep things simple and keep growing (our hair but not our product stash) together.

I know it probably goes against the ex-product junkie code to give you a referral code for somewhere to buy products BUT even non-product junkies need somewhere to buy stuff. Click here for a link to Kiyo Beauty to get £10 off your first order if you spend over £40 and I get 500 loyalty points too – click here to explore!
It’s one of my favourite places to buy haircare these days, this is not an affiliate link just me sharing a discount they send to everyone. Other vendors are available 😄
