Wash Day Notes #1

—I’ve decided I’ll intermittently be recording (in blog form) some of what I’m doing on my wash days and talk a little bit about what’s going on with our hair and life. Anyway, this is the inaugural wash day post! Hello! I’ll hopefully remember to do this again and it won’t be one and done!

CoWash/ Conditioner – As I Am CoWash Cleansing Conditioner (sample)

I’ve finally cracked the secret to using samples and coating your hair evenly. I’ve got a few posts coming up about wash days I’ve done with only samples and I’ve struggled to stretch the samples to cover my whole head of hair. And I definitely would not consider my hair to be even that long. So my secret/ tip/ hack is to squeeze the contents into a bowl. This way you can see how much you’re working with and portion it out better. The same sample size I used a few weeks ago that I didn’t think was enough was more than enough today. So the tip works!

Deep Conditioner – Garnier Ultimate Blends Nourishing Hair Food Banana and Shea 3 in 1 Hair Mask For Dry Hair

It’s got a really (unnecessarily) long name but I’m loving this DC so much. It’s described as a Hair Mask and there is a slight difference between a Hair Mask and DC but I use them interchangeably. Always used with heat – courtesy of the fiddly but effective Hair Therapy Wrap.

Rinse – Ecoce Organic Raw Unfiltered Spanish Apple Cider Vinegar with The Mother + cooled down boiled water + Tea Tree, Rosemary and Lemon essential oils

I’ve only been doing rinses for a few weeks but they’re supposed to help balance your hair’s pH, close the hairs’ cuticles and be a last great step in the washing part of wash day. The jury is still out…

Leave In – Water + As I Am So Much Moisture! Hydrating Lotion (sample)

Oil – Home Blend – mostly Olive Oil (can’t remember what else)

Cream – As I Am Twist Defining Cream (sample)

I’ve decided to do LOC today and use the cream last as it’s being applied for a style. I hope to twist out in a couple of days and obviously look awesome!

Protective Style – Loose Two Strand Twists

Because they’re simple.

Maintenance for the week

Probably once or twice this week – Occasional spritz with water or the Taliah Waajid Shea-Coco Daily Leave-n Conditioner spray, I’ll run a little oil through the twists/ twist out and a little bit of Aunt Jackie’s Flaxseed Recipes Hydrating Sealing Butter (which I absolutely love) on the ends.

Anything Else

My beautiful little girl has been having breakouts on her hairline and after a little Googling it seems the most likely perpetrator is our hair products. As I’m a bit of a product junkie we’ve been moving from product to product for ages so it’ll be a struggle to narrow down the culprit.

Originally, I thought it was maybe oil but I stopped oiling all our scalps recently due to her breakouts and some stuff I was reading about oiling your scalp being bad. But the breakouts persist.

One interesting thing is that she is not breaking out on her neck where her hair touches her skin which is another indicator that hair products are the problem. Maybe it’s hormonal (she’s almost a pre-teen I guess). Perhaps it’s just life and it’s a thing her skin is going through right now.

But my plan is to try to eliminate products that have ingredients that commonly cause breakouts and see if that helps first. It’s not looking good for Shea Butter by the way! I feel like a detective. I will get to the bottom of this! (Or it will resolve itself 🤷🏾‍♀️).

Anyway have a good week and may your next wash day be wonderful.

Let’s keep growing together!
