SPOTLIGHT: Almonds

I don’t like nuts unless they’re chocolate covered. I’m a woman of simple tastes. But I learnt very early on in my healthy hair journey that when it comes to oils and nuts, Almond (or more specifically, Sweet Almond) is a super oil. Also, apparently, Almonds aren’t actually nuts? Who knew?!

Almonds are great because they come in so many usable forms – almond powder, almond milk, almond oil and, well, just plain old almond.

Almonds are packed full of Biotin, Magnesium, Vitamin E, Iron and Protein which are great for your hair. It softens, nourishes, strengthens, repairs your hair and is good for your scalp too. And on top of those benefits, there are also the benefits for skin – Vitamins, Minerals and Essential Fatty Acids, that work to deeply moisturise the skin, help UV damage and reduce irritation. It may even help with my hyperpigmentation which is awesome because I don’t want to turn yellow using turmeric to get rid of it. With all that in mind, no wonder it’s such a popular ingredient. And unlike a lot of other cosmetic ingredients, you can eat them, if you feel so inclined. I do not.

I’ve bought a few products in the past containing Almond as the hero ingredient in:

I’ve only used the Garnier lotion so far out of this group and I was in love with it, I’m very much looking forward to trying the others.

DIY Time

Now the Smooth Almond Butter was bought from Aldi or Lidl because I’d seen something about how good Almond Butter was for hair. When I saw the butter on offer shortly after, I had to buy it. I then searched for the DIY recipe again and could I find anything? Not one thing. When I originally searched, I found a few Peanut Butter recipes as well so I was just going to swap one nut butter for another. However, I’ve looked again and found quite a few I can give a try. I could use the Almond Oil for my DIY hair and face masks but I want that damn butter out of my cupboard!

DIY Hair Oil

Okay, I’ll get this one out of the way first. I’ll mix up some of the oils I have lying around the house and make sure my Sweet Almond Oil is part of the mix. Ta-dah! But for real, there are hundreds of oil mixes containing Sweet Almond Oil, just add this golden magic to whatever you make and feel the above mentioned benefits.

Simples.

DIY Hair Mask

Ingredients:

  • Smooth Almond Butter

Directions:

  1. Slather all over your scalp and hair.
  2. Leave for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Wash off.

Okay, so far it seems like I’m half arsing these DIYs but honestly these are the “recipes” I’ve found – here and here. Or there’s this one that uses Coconut Oil, Almond Oil and Coconut Milk. But I’m not sure about that one because I wouldn’t want the Coconut Milk to go to waste as we don’t use it a lot at home. It says to use the Coconut Milk to thin out the butter but I could use Almond Milk (sticking with the theme) or Aloe Vera Juice perhaps? I’m sure all these other DIYers are just making this stuff up, so I’m going to aswell!

DIY Face Mask

Almond Butter Face Mask For Dry Skin from WomenBuddha.com

Ingredients:

  • 25 grams Almond Butter
  • 25 grams Aloe Vera Gel
  • 10ml Honey

Directions:

  1. Mix these ingredients in a bowl
  2. Apply to the face and leave it for 45 minutes
  3. Rinse off with lukewarm water
  4. Pat your face dry
  5. Repeat 1 to 2 times a week or up to 3 times a week during times of drier skin.

I like the look of this one as I have all the ingredients readily available and it’s a pretty simple mix and apply situation.

Alternatively, I’ve found these ones that use Almond Oil, which may or may not be better as I might wuss out of putting BUTTER on my face.

I’ll keep you posted on how these DIYs go when I get round to it. Eventually.

Let me know if you use Almonds in your skin and hair care, and how?

Let’s keep growing together!
