Song Of The Month – January 2018 – Get On The Bus By Destiny’s Child

I can’t remember a time when Destiny’s Child or Beyoncé weren’t a part of my life. Well I can, there was a brief period where the Spice Girls where the greatest girl group of all time. I know TLC were around but I’m from the UK so at their peak, you couldn’t breathe without something Spice Girls being shoved in your face.

But Destiny’s Child were different. They weren’t surrounded by the hype, at least not on this side of the Atlantic, their songs were more complex than the Spice Girls glorified nursery rhymes, their super co-ordinated style was fashion forward at the time. They were beautiful, young, black women being extremely successful. I could easily pretend to feel like I could be one of them. They made me feel powerful, like I was the greatest singer in the world, like I was a boss before we were calling ourselves bosses. And we all know how their success story turned out, especially for the lead singer.

I’d loved their first self titled album but The Writing’s On The Wall was iconic, is iconic and forever will be and this is one of my favourites although it’s pretty much a toss-up between this and 90% of the songs, intros and outros. I could probably lose Sweet Sixteen off the album and not notice. Coincidentally, as I’m writing about one of my favourite musical entities of all time, I’m watching one of the “forgotten” members cameo in Rosewood so respect is deserved, they’ve all made their successes and are still great role models, every member, in every version of the line up.
