Skincare But Make It Cheap(er)!

When I was about 17 or 18, I said to myself, “when I turn 30, I’m going to start buying Oil of Ulay, so I stay looking young.” I will always remember it as Ulay, you will not sway me. I thought that thirty would be a good time to start caring about how old my skin looked. Because when you’re 18, 30 seems old.

When I actually turned 30, I did not do this.

However, last year, I was looking for a new day lotion and I bought the NIVEA Q10 Power Anti-Wrinkle Firming Face Cream and I loved it! I very rarely find body lotion I don’t like. They’re thick and creamy and moisturise my prone-to-being-very-dry-skin. It’s not hard to find a decent one at all. And on the off chance it doesn’t work, I have clothes to cover me up. Finding a decent face lotion is not so simple. I find they look creamy but they’re watery and unsubstantial. My face still looks dry and flaky within minutes of using it.

But I’d been loving this Nivea cream. And it fulfilled my promise to myself as a teen, a tad late, to buy anti-wrinkle formulations. It’s very easy to say Black Don’t Crack because it rhymes and sounds cool but it does crack, just less! I still get ID’ed for scratch cards in the shop though – it’s a mild frustration of mine but I guess it means I’m still benefiting from the last fleeting moments of youth on my skin.

So as my first pot was coming to an end, it seemed like a good time to restock. I didn’t want to be without my new fave! Off I popped to Sainsbury’s as I needed to get a few other bits and due to Covid restrictions I didn’t want to be going round all different shops. These days I am in and out, one and done, if I can’t get it where I’m going, I’m not getting it!

But it was £10.

For one pot.

I’m 99% positive I wouldn’t have paid £10 for it the first time. I must’ve bought it on offer. I just wouldn’t. Did I? I don’t know for sure but what I did know was that I wasn’t paying that that day! It was the end of the month and finances were looking a little sketchy, it just didn’t seem like a good use of my money. So I bought these instead…

Yes, I bought 4 products instead of one. I know what you’re thinking, didn’t I just say I was getting to the thin end of the month financially? I did. But I also needed a lotion and I wanted value for the little money I had available. So to me, it made sense to buy all the above because, all 4 of those only cost me £8! Seemed like a very good bargain to me that probably wasn’t going to hang around. Four for less than the price of one.

I won’t be using the Night Cream any time soon as I’m still using this monstrosity but the Day Cream was a necessity buy. Although I had thought my next day lotion would be at least SPF30 but low sun protection is better than none!

The first few ingredients of what I bought and what I wanted were fairly similar. I’m not sure I was getting my anti-wrinkle properties (but honestly, I don’t believe that part would have made any difference, it’s just nice to think you’re putting the effort in!) I just hoped it was as good and if it wasn’t, it only cost me £2 a tube. I like Nivea body lotion, I like the Q10 lotion, I was pretty confident in this buy!

And just so you know I know, £10 isn’t a lot for a face lotion or any skin care product but you don’t always have to pay more for good basic skincare. It’s not like I’m buying a peel or a serum from SK-II or Tatcha. Yes, my cheap ass knows what they are! I just can’t afford them 🤣

Let’s keep growing together!
