Progress Check – September 2017

snapchat filter, seflieIf you saw my last post you’ll know that I started a little craft project up in my hair. I’m still not sure how I feel about that but it’s all in aid of getting a head full of good, healthy hair. Progress is key, no matter how small. I will have to come to terms with the fact that in order for me to get to my desired length (#journeytotailbonelength), I will need to lose some hair.

Anyway, there have been other goings on in the journey from being Woeful and getting to FroFull. Here’s the rundown…

A couple of months ago my hair was feeling oily which is not what I want. I want it to feel moisturised not like a greasy sponge. But to confuse matters, it was also feeling dry. Dry and oily, as if my life wasn’t complicated enough. I decided to try to fix it which meant I was only going to do the LOC Method once a day instead of day and night and voila! My hair started feeling great again. I don’t know what changed with my hair but at one point it loved being moisturised twice a day and now hates it. These are little changes I would never have noticed before my big chop. I’m currently using water as my Leave In, Jamaican Black Castor Oil and Rapeseed Oil and my own Whipped Shea Butter.

cocoa butter, big chunkIn product junkie news, I bought Cocoa Butter for the first time. Wow, that stuff has a powerful aroma. I’m not sure how I plan on using it. I just know I wanted to try a butter that is possibly better for Low Porosity hair. I think some people still find this still too heavy but I really wanted to give it a try. Naturally Curly describe Cocoa Butter as being more for medium porosity so I shouldn’t really argue with The Oracles of Hair but I need to try it for myself.

After my first six months of just watching my hair grow to see if it grows and how fast, I wanted to start trying some hair growth techniques. First up is The Inversion Method and I will admit publicly on this here blog that I failed. Only for a few days but I forgot to do it. I didn’t want to do it but I picked it up eventually and will keep massaging my scalp in oil, dangling my head over the sofa and trying not pass out from all the blood rushing to my follicles.

I’ve also decided that I can’t be half arsing the kid’s hair. Their curls are so beautiful when a little extra time is spent on them. Even if I’m not there curating each and every curl, I need to make more of an effort with protective styling, detangling and prepooing. The only thing I haven’t yet quite worked into the routine is deep conditioning. I’ve decided that to get started we’ll probably try once a fortnight on a separate day to our main wash day so I’m not dunking them in and out of the bath. Or letting them out to play for a bit before round 2. It would help if they didn’t all run at the sight of the shower head because then I could just quickly rinse out products but my kids are afraid of the strangest things.beautiful mixed kids

I started taking progress photos every week of my hair from the day I shaved it off so I could do some sort of cool gif or slide show but I just couldn’t keep it together. It would have been so cool but I really annoyed myself with it. It’s been about 8 weeks since I last took a photo so I either need to pick it back up again quickly or just let it go…still undecided.

As we all know water is very important in general health but also in helping to hydrate your hair and skin from within.  I’m trying guys, really trying, but it’s hard. Along the lines of making healthy choices, I’ve gone on a diet with the hope of losing 10 lbs by end of year. I’ve lost 2 lbs already in the last week. I’m hopeful but there are a lot of times over the next few months where I will probably eat until I burst, just being honest. I’ve even worked in some exercises inspired by The Body Coach (check out his channel) who is all about High Intensity Interval Training, so short but powerful bursts of exercise. Perfect for a mum of 3 with a full-time job and 2 blogs!

Oh and I used Curlformers for the first time since I got my hair back. I ended up looking like a blackberry (pictures to follow!).

Finally, I decided that as much as I’m chasing length, I want volume. I want a gravity defying afro crown sitting on my head. BUT I need to live with the fact that even if I get to tailbone length hair, it won’t look like that’s what I’ve got. Thanks shrinkage! And I suppose subconsciously that’s what I’ve been doing as I measure my hair growth from the middle of my head rather than the back like a normal person.

Anyway, that’s what I’ve been up to on my hair journey!

Let’s keep growing together!
