Snapshot & Length Check: Three Years And Six Months

hair growth comparison

Three years and six months! Woo! I should really be happier but in all honesty, I’m disappointed in myself. Lockdown has not been kind to my hair or more accurately, I have not been kind to my hair in lockdown. I have resisted the urge to start all over again but only just. The first few weeks my hair was hiding in a headwrap. Then one of my friends wanted to video chat so I thought I’d make an effort and not only did I wash my hair, I had it out and free during the call! She even kindly complimented me on how good it was looking. And she knows what she’s talking about!

And then by day 3 of that wash cycle it was back in a head wrap, underneath still in the high puff style of the video chat until yesterday. That chat was 3 weeks ago.

Girl in a headwrap
I’ve used this headwrap but probably haven’t looked this polished in lockdown!

My name is Woeful To FroFull but I am just woeful.

Last year, I really started to get into a funk with my hair but a few months ago I proudly proclaimed that I had found my mojo and was back on track. That was not a lie but it was optimistic. I don’t know why I haven’t been able to muster the energy to do the work over the last few months but I’ve come to the conclusion that I am my own saboteur (I’ve been watching a lot of Drag Race) and as much as I’ve been screwing this up because I don’t think I’ll ever reach my length goal *so what is the point*, I realised, that my other goal, which is equally important is hair health and if I damage my hair, I’ll have to shave it all off again and start again. It’s taken me 3 and a half years to get to **drum roll please**

29.5cm/ 11.6 inches

and with growth that slow (is it really slow tho?), I haven’t got the patience to start again and I want to give myself a little chance of success. Even if it is probably minuscule, I want to have the long, healthy afro hair of my dreams. Now it’s slightly shorter than I reported last time which means my hair has either broken off (really bad) or I happened to grab a slightly longer section of hair last time (extremely lucky). I could have dug around in my hair trying to find longer bits but, like a lot of my actions recently, I could not be arsed (bothered if your not from the UK).

Last night, I did my whole routine and in an attempt to be good missed no steps even when I was getting bored! This is a snapshot of products I’m using and will carry on using –

Pre-poo

Olive Oil

Deep conditioner

Hair dampened with water and Aloe Vera Juice mix and adding Maui Moisture Strength & Anti-Breakage Agave Hair Mask

Heat

I wore my Hair Therapy Wrap for the first time from my British Curlies Haul to provide some heat and intensify the DC.

Shampoo

Eden Bodyworks Jojoba & Monoi Shampoo

Conditioner

Eden Bodyworks Jojoba & Monoi Conditioner

Leave In

Maui Moisture Strength & Anti-Breakage Agave Hair Mask – doing double duty in this week’s wash day

Oil

Olive Oil – is there any other oil? The answer to that is yes but do I have them to hand? Yes but I always end up using Olive Oil

Cream

carol brown o'natreal 100% natural hair mud, woeful to frofull
Got this at Afro Hair and Beauty Live 2019

Carol Brown O’Natreal 100% Natural Hair Mud – not entirely sure this is a cream, it’s more of a balm but I like it.

Oil

(I saw on a forum that I like that the LOCO (Leave In, Oil, Cream, Oil) Method may be more beneficial than LOC) – hair finished up with Olive Oil again to finally seal everything in

Protective Style

wash day process woeful to frofull
Top row L-R – washed and unloved, DCing under my hair therapy wrap. Bottom row L-R – ready to wash, finished doo-doo plaits/ Felicia braids slept on overnight

Doo-doo plaits – I will wear a headwrap over them all week but I will also wear a satin night scarf underneath or just wear the satin scarf, I mean the only people that are seeing me at the moment are my family and my colleagues on a medium quality video call.

And that’s how I hope to go forth. I know I’m messing this whole journey up and I don’t want to, I want to mend my ways before I do some proper damage. So here goes, take #362 or something like that. Let’s do this right.

Let’s keep growing together!
