Hair

Length Check: 3 Years And 3 Months

I shaved my head not long before my youngest kid turned one. My biggest regret on my healthy hair journey was not shaving it when he was born. New kid, no hair, fresh start. Then I could have tracked my hair growth alongside his. But as regrets go in life, that’s pretty minor.

What I regret more is the blatant disrespect I show my hair sometimes. I suppose it’s laziness, stress, tiredness, apathy but more likely just slipping into old patterns. Old habits are so hard to break and you would think over 3 years in, they’d be well broken but it doesn’t always work like that. I’m accepting that sometimes you fail and disappoint yourself, but it is not the end of the world by any stretch. Especially in this case because it’s only hair. But…

Hair is everything! And according to Anne Lamott, “all truth is a paradox.” So it can be just hair and everything all at the same time.

I think I’ve done enough good work that the hair on my crown now measures a whopping 30.5cm. As regular readers will know, I measure that part of my head rather than the very front or the very back. That’s the part that has always grown the longest. And it’s getting long now!! I knew the day would come when a standard ruler wouldn’t be good enough, my first estimate had me getting to this point a lot sooner but honestly, I’m not disappointed.

You might not hit your goal when you hoped or expected but if you hit it, you succeeded. Unlike at other length checks, or at least the last few, I’m feeling really positive about my progress even if I’m stunting it a little with my “work” ethic. But maybe, just maybe, I’ll get that tailbone length hair I’m aiming for.

Maybe. Just maybe…

Let’s keep growing together!
